I came upon this scene during my second visit to Glacier, one of my favorite national parks. This was captured the day after the Howe Ridge Fire started in August 2018, as you may be able to tell from the haziness in the background. I was camping in the national forest right outside the park, and I vividly remember seeing the lightning that would eventually start the blaze. No rain, no thunder, just lightning in the distance. It gave me pause, but I had never imagined the destruction that would ensue. By nightfall this area would be closed to the public and the lodge would be evacuated. The fire is out of frame to the left, across the lake. The fire would explode to over 2,500 acres within three days and went on to burn for the next month and a half, destroying over 14,000 acres.
